Where Art, Science, and Technology Make the Imagined Real

In 2016, Nokia joined forces with the historic Bell Labs to produce disruptive innovations that improve the quality of life. To demonstrate groundbreaking technologies, Nokia Bell Labs needed a groundbreaking theater. Moey created the Future X Emulator, specially commanded by a new sleeve device. A facilitator powers on and controls a 36-foot high, 270-degree projection. Audiences are immersed at once in visions of the future, complete with full-surround audio and a rumbling floor.

Connected Worlds is one of the largest, most complex responsive environments ever built for a museum. Created by Design I/O for the New York Hall of Science, with A/V integration and show control by Moey, it surrounds visitors with six fourteen-foot interactive screens fed by a thirty-eight-foot digital waterfall. Dozens of people can play at once, using simple gestures to shape living worlds, where every change ripples out to affect the others.

Google is preparing for the next hurricane, blackout, or other large-scale disaster. The Emergency Communication Pod is designed to restore communications capabilities anywhere networks have been disrupted by a major event. It is a lightweight, waterproof, mobile unit with solar panels that can also be powered by battery, grid, or generator. By charging 80 cell phones and devices at once while serving as a WiFi hotspot and providing HD broadcasts on a sheltered public monitor, the ePod can keep people in touch in our times of greatest need. The ePod can also be connected to others in a network.

Big Mouth is one of the most popular attractions at Exploration Place, the second installation of its kind after the Children's Museum of Virginia. Retrofitted by Moey in close collaboration with The Science Museum of Western Virginia, and refined together over the years to add new lessons in dental health, it invites kids into a giant, tactile interactive. A monitor at the back of the mouth runs a find-the-tooth scavenger hunt, and because Big Mouth is so big, young people usually end up playing together.

For the 2014 FIFA World Cup Final, car maker Audi commissioned the assembly of a massive sculpture on New York City's East River: a towering array of shipping containers holding twenty-eight Audi A8 vehicles. The headlights, directed at Manhattan, were arranged to make numbers, as in a digital clock. Every time a goal was scored, the sculpture updated, alerting all of Manhattan’s East Side with a blazing show. Moey created the sculpture’s software and interface, which also allowed for non-scoreboard luxury effects, and engineered its power and wiring.

The Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) is dedicated to increasing people’s understanding and appreciation of math. As a centerpiece for its main exhibit gallery, Moey created Harmony of the Spheres, a sculptural interactive that inspires visitors in the connections between math and music. By touching illuminated spheres, visitors create audible harmonies together, and observe their visual progressions and patterns. Additionally, Moey created Math Square, Formula Morph, Sixth Sense and Logo Generator. Through games, hands-on engagement and interactive art, visitors explore fractals, algorithms, shapes, symmetry and much more.

Jones Beach is on the ocean side of Long Island. It is an immediately accessible respite for the greater urban community of America’s largest city. The Energy and Nature Center engages visitors in considering the park’s dune and marine life in conjunction with our ability to better support it through smarter uses of energy. Interpretive exhibits built by Moey and designed by AJA Architecture and Tactile Studio, cover 53,500 sf of indoor and outdoor space and include aquaria, touch tanks, an immersive model “smart” home, solar powered interactives, a climbable whale skeleton sculpture, interpreted ADA walking paths, and much more.

Health Inside Out is a fun-time arcade where families learn about being healthy through rides, games, and amusements. Its presence in the 2,500sf Grand Hall has transformed an underutilized space into a must-do destination at the hub of the Exploration Place building. Visitors grab vaccine hammers to play Whack-A-Virus, and aim for healthy targets in Nutrition Skeeball. They ride an Emotional Roller Coaster through their feelings, fly a real helicopter ambulance, and much more. Being healthy makes it possible to experience life. Learning about it should be fun.

The Battle of Blackwater Bay was the first large-scale war sequence in the award-winning HBO series, Game of Thrones. The Blackwater Bay Experience gave fans the opportunity to fight in the battle on the side of the Lanisters, defending Kings Landing against the invading Baratheon navy. Participants in a theatrical castle setting drew back the strings of enormous archery bows and fired virtual flaming arrows at ships in the bay on screen. The experience traveled to cities around the world, from New York to Amsterdam, Belfast, Toronto and Sao Paolo.

The Interactive Garden is an alluring composition of 3D printed flowers that respond to people’s proximity and motion. As visitors approach, the Garden responds with sound and light, producing tones and colors that reflect the visitor’s actions. And the Garden reveals new rewards for duration and audience size, changing its tones, colors and luminosity with longer stays, larger crowds and more engagement. The Garden has appeared at numerous corporate events and similar venues, including Adobe’s Max Bash and the Macy’s Flower Show. Able to reach twenty-four feet long and feature 100 interactive flowers, the Interactive Garden has been creatively reconfigured each time to suit its host environments.

Ipsen is a biopharmaceutical group committed to discovering new solutions for targeted diseases and improvements in patient quality-of-life. To make complex injections more accurate, as in cervical dystonia or spasticity, the Injection Simulator was developed to give healthcare workers opportunities to safely practice. The Simulator pairs a soft surface on a mannequin’s body with a technology-enabled syringe and video screen. When practitioners insert the syringe into the soft surface, they see a 3D anatomy visualization on screen and receive real-time alerts about their work inside the body. The syringe and interface were designed in collaboration with Blue Telescope.

The House of Walker event gathered more than 1,700 people over five nights in 2014. As part of the event, Moey worked with Havas Worldwide to create an interactive, communal Tasting Table for invite-only guests. When they arrived, guests were given intriguing cards, which fit into slots at their place settings. The cards prompted mystifying changes in the table’s appearance, along with information about each whiskey they were served in a series. Guests were also invited to link their cards to social media accounts. Using simple buttons on their place settings, guests then shared on their accounts without reaching for their phones: the experience was shared without interruption.

Hempstead Lake is a created body of water. It is inland on Long Island, but it is part of a natural watershed that extends to the Atlantic Ocean and has been made more resilient through State and Federal efforts. These efforts focus on storm mitigation and recovery abilities, and employ a broad mix of eco-friendly strategies, including restored wetlands and replanted fields. As a result the watershed’s biodiversity is increasing and this further improves the area’s resilience. This human-ecology partnership is the subject of the Center’s dynamically interactive exhibit, designed by Moey and built by Chicago Scenic. Visitors explore new engineering, flourishing habitats, and mutual overlaps between the two.

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum occupies a pier on the Hudson River and includes a legendary aircraft carrier. In the main hold of the carrier, Moey designed and produced an 8,000sf centerpiece exhibit, Heroic Journeys: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Stories. The exhibit seamlessly wove together multimedia, artifact displays, and the ship itself, and presented very personal stories of people defending America in a half century of wars, from WWII to Afghanistan. Visitors heard directly from heroes and their loved ones in activated artifacts and video theaters that made use of existing ship architecture.

Designed in support of President Obama’s “Educate to Innovate” mission, the Energy Lab enables the Army National Guard to bring STEM learning about alternative energy sources to high school youth across the U.S. Visitors first view a film inside a shipping container theater, and then, in a pop-up tent, engage with interactive games that explore the possibilities of wind, water, sun, and earth in producing energy. Real results are seen in the simulated city of Enegrytown. The entire experience, which debuted in Alexandria, VA, packs up and travels on one eighteen wheeler.

John Boyd Thacher purchased 300 acres of land to preserve it as it was. Now a state park since 1914, its new visitor center exhibits bring outdoor adventurers of all ages into a new story. Through a mix of traditional, interactive and fully immersive exhibits, visitors explore the park’s natural wonders, the forces that have shaped them over time and the conservation efforts that have maintained and made them accessible. Visitors get oriented to the park and head out on trails with an informed perspective of a place that is still taking shape.

Scientists have been studying the lakes of Green Lakes State Park since the 1830s, and they are still mystifying. Green Lakes is also home to vast old-growth forests, and has a history that connects the Erie Canal, Great Depression and WWII. When a 1940s boat house was converted into an Environmental Education Center, Moey designed and built exhibits for a hall that frequently doubles as a gathering and event space. The exhibit packs a density of interactivity and information into a moveable table with a 3D map of the park. Additional interactives and displays appear on rails that are attractive while clean and simple.

Shirley Chisholm State Park is located in Jamaica Bay on the eastern shoreline of Brooklyn. As the second largest state park in New York City, it is set on top of two former waste dump sites that had grown into hills over thirty-plus years. The sites were closed in the 1980s, sealed in the 2000s, and planted with tons of soil and 33,000 native plants. Because the landfill seals do not allow penetration, the Education Center, designed by Moey and built by ARCH Construction and Design NYC, appears inside two shipping containers: one themed on land, the other on water. Visitors engage in interactive explorations inside the containers, discovering the park’s history and building appreciation for its return to a natural state.

Grafton Lakes is a 2,500-acre state park with six glacial ponds in New York’s Capital Region. The region was heavily forested in the state’s logging era, and is now populated and economically vibrant. The park provides a “backyard” for the Region that protects the forest and the diversity of life within it. To raise people’s awareness of the park’s biodiversity and their own opportunities to protect it, Moey created a multi-generational exhibit in the park’s new visitor center. The exhibit sets an array of interactives and displays in a built representation of the park’s habitats, and features a 500 gallon turtle tank.

AT&T is a global leader in connecting people with who and what they love. By showing what the company does for its customers, AT&T raises its profile among top level clients and elevates awareness among company executives at its corporate briefing center in Bedminster, NJ. When AT&T upgraded the briefing center to meet technology’s accelerating changes, Moey was brought onboard to create a suite of playful environmental interactives, including extensive multi-touch tables where visitors explore together the technical principles that make consumer technologies work, and a dynamic game played on a shared circular screen where players make connections between parts of a business in data-driven “ecosystem.”

American Spirits: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition took National Constitution Center visitors back in time to a dangerous and thrilling era. Three immersive experiences created by Moey completed the journey. Visitors tried a secret knock on a Speakeasy Door. A shifty-eyed virtual doorman allowed them in if they got it right. Visitors also joined the Police Lineup for a mugshot photo opportunity. And they marveled at Wayne Wheelers Amazing Amendment Machine, a funhouse version of the 18th Amendment’s creation and passage. The Machine combined kinetic sculpture and embedded video to convey the legislative process in a captivating way.

The W. M. Keck Observatory includes two massive telescopes on the peak of Mauna Kea, a volcano in Hawaii. Its location affords views of the cosmos through little atmospheric turbulence, and its pioneering technologies deliver incredibly precise images of all of outer space. The exhibit celebrates the observatory and brings its telescopes to a mainland, general audience. A scale model allows visitors to look into the telescopes and consider their remarkable mirrors, which change shape 2,000 times per second. The video that accompanies it, and was shot by Moey on-location, provides unique views of the telescope at work in its ascendant landscape.

Magical, electro-mechanical, and digital, where worlds collide. Build a Rainbow is a collaborative, carnival-style interactive designed by Moey for Gulliver's Gate. Three players work three cranes, dropping balls into spinning color buckets that send helicopters, balloons, and cranes scrambling to lift pieces of a hidden rainbow into place. You can finish it solo if you are skilled and very lucky. Finish it with strangers and the whole thing erupts in lights, music, and a cheer that makes everybody in the room turn around.
